Upper Valley? How a Newspaper War Created a Virtual State in Western New Hampshire and Eastern Vermont

UPPER VALLEY? HOW A NEWSPAPER WAR CREATED A VIRTUAL STATE IN WESTERN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND EASTERN VERMONT

Learn how the term "Upper Valley" came to be and how the term became a name for a cluster of towns that are connected in many ways, even though divided by a river and a state line. Deepen your understanding of this history and its relevance to contemporary social and cultural life in the region.

Steve Taylor is a lifelong scholar of New Hampshire (and Vermont!) agriculture and rural life. He has been a daily newspaper reporter and editor, freelance writer, dairy farmer and for 25 years served as New Hampshire’s commissioner of agriculture. He was the founding executive director of the New Hampshire Humanities Council and in recent years has been an active participant in its Humanities to Go program.

Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane That Transformed New England

A hurricane will never surprise us again. But that’s what happened to the people of New England on September 21, 1938. Without any warning, the most destructive weather event ever to hit the Northeast pummeled the coast andblasted its way to Vermont and New Hampshire with torrential rain, flooding, and sustained winds over 100 miles per hour.

Stephen Long tells the story of New England’s Katrina, focusing on the devastation to the region’s forests and the daunting challenge facing New Englanders still in the throes of the Great Depression. His presentation is richly illustrated with archival photos of storm damage and the unprecedented recovery operation, making the storm and its aftermath come alive. A journalist and co-founder of Northern Woodlands magazine, Stephen Long is the author of Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane that Transformed New England. A Vermont Humanities (Vermont Reads) sponsored talk, and in partnership with Windsor Vermont Historical Association.

As part of our Collections Room transformation, for the foreseeable future our work parties will focus on creating finding aids. A finding aid is a descriptive tool that helps researchers locate and access materials within an archival collection. It serves as a comprehensive guide that provides context, organization, and detailed information about the contents of archival materials.

Finding aids serve multiple purposes:

  • They help archivists manage and preserve collections.

  • They assist researchers in determining if a collection contains relevant materials before visiting.

  • They guide users to specific items within potentially large collections.

  • They maintain the context and relationships between materials

  • Finding Aid Template

We invite anyone who is interested to help regardless of whether you can spend a few minutes with us or participate on an ongoing basis as a member. Contact us at wvha1777@gmail.com if you’d like to know more.

Lafayette, More Than a Rockstar

The Marquis de Lafayette visited Vermont on June 28-29, 1825. A few months from now, our state will celebrate the bicentennial of his visit. In anticipation, WPL & WVHA is hosting speaker Peter Reilly.

Reilly will discuss the extreme enthusiasm with which Americans greeted Lafayette on his Farewell Tour. He’ll present a brief summary of his life and the national and international situation that accounts for the exceptional welcome he received.

About the Speaker: “I have had a lifelong interest in American History.  In 2016, I noticed a marker indicating that Lafayette had stopped briefly near my home in N. Oxford, MA.  All I really knew about Lafayette's tour was that is was a "really big deal", and I resolved to learn more.  Fortunately, I discovered the American Friends of Lafayette and have been working with them to commemorate the Bicentennial since then. “

Now that the shelving project in the WVHA room at the town offices is nearly complete, members of the WVHA board have been gathering each month on either Saturday morning or Wednesday evening to house collections in safe storage and inventory them.

All sorts of tasks need doing—removing pictures from frames, sleeving photographs, inventorying old newspapers, and boxing and inventorying other collections. No experience is necessary, and we can use all the help we can get.

We invite anyone who is interested to help regardless of whether you can spend a few minutes with us or participate on an ongoing basis as a member. Contact us at wvha1777@gmail.com if you’d like to know more.

WVHA & CMH Art Installation Project Discussion

In-person at the Windsor Town Welcome Center with Zoom Option:

Contribute local lore to inform artistic installation at Central and Main Housing!

The new building going up at 133 Main Street will bring 25 new residences to downtown Windsor. Transforming a construction project into homes takes special attention to creating a unique place. We are planning artwork and landscaping that will highlight the uniqueness of Windsor and facilitate the connection to the broader community by tying into the history of the land, place, and people. The development team is looking for your input!

Please contribute a story - whether it represents history, lasting culture, or a memory from downtown Windsor. These contributions will be collated and will inform the artistic rendering carved into Vermont Slate. This final art will be installed on the side of the building along the public walkway connected Central and Main streets, amid plantings that are culturally significant to Abenaki.
