The Marquis de Lafayette visited Vermont on June 28-29, 1825. A few months from now, our state will celebrate the bicentennial of his visit. In anticipation, WPL & WVHA is hosting speaker Peter Reilly.
Reilly will discuss the extreme enthusiasm with which Americans greeted Lafayette on his Farewell Tour. He’ll present a brief summary of his life and the national and international situation that accounts for the exceptional welcome he received.
About the Speaker: “I have had a lifelong interest in American History. In 2016, I noticed a marker indicating that Lafayette had stopped briefly near my home in N. Oxford, MA. All I really knew about Lafayette's tour was that is was a "really big deal", and I resolved to learn more. Fortunately, I discovered the American Friends of Lafayette and have been working with them to commemorate the Bicentennial since then. “
