Anti-Racism Book Club Author Discussion w/Cynthia Bittinger

Vermont Author Cynthia Bittinger will discuss her important book, “Vermont Women, Native Americans & African Americans: Out of the Shadows of History.” Originally published in 2012, a Vermont Digger article at the time by Greg Guma stated, “Given Vermont’s contemporary image as a refuge for independent and progressive thinkers it can be jarring to look at a not-so-distant past when the state was an isolationist bastion in which Native Americans had to call themselves gypsies to avoid sterilization….Cynthia D. Bittinger’s new book does not over-stress this “saddest chapter” in 20th century state history. But Vermont’s eugenics movement does suggest a central target of this slim, significant volume, which updates the traditional narrative.” Ms. Bittinger will talk about her book and also about plans to revise it. If you’d like to read the book ahead of time, come by the library and pick up a copy. All are welcome to attend this talk, whether you have read the book or not. Sponsored by Black Lives Matter Windsor, VT, Windsor Historical Society, and Windsor Public Library.
